The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role & Key Responsibilities

From your first day with us you will be part of a policing family making a real difference.

It is our mission to identify and protect vulnerable people, prevent and respond to harm and keep people safe.

In this role you will be joining a team that is responsible for carrying out Identification parades in line with the Police and Criminal Evdidence Act (PACE) - Code D. This process involves witnesses to specific crimes being guided through a process where they are asked to view a number of images in order to test whether they can pick the suspect out or not in an investigation.

You will also be trained up to be the Sussex Police E-Fit officer as part of the secondary element to this role.  Allowing you to produce computer generated facial images as described by a witness in order that the identification of an offender may be obtained. 

In your ID officer role you will be responsible for:

Examining and extracting information from requests made by operational officers for Identification procedures to be held at the unit or satellite stations ensuring sufficient and detailed information to satisfy the legal requirements of PACE and the procedural requirements of the ID Unit.

Provision of an administrative support service to all witnesses / victims attending Video Film Identifications including (a) the initial reception of each witness / victim at the unit (b) fully explaining procedures to them and where appropriate, escorting them around the unit, and (c) ensuring they are constantly supervised before and after the parade.

Maintenance and updating the diary / booking system for ID procedures, and management information, ensuring that the database complies with current policy on the use of computer systems and with Data Protection legislation.

Preparation of a file for each parade, incorporating specific information extracted from information initially provided by the officer in the case (OIC) to ensure subsequent procedures comply with PACE and appropriate evidence is documented.

Conducting the filming of suspects both in custody and those returning voluntarily.

Using images from the database to produce video identification parades including the suspects and then conducting the viewing by witnesses and solicitors.

Attendance at court in relation to the preparation and conducting of identification procedures.

Operation of CCTV and video recording / editing equipment in the unit to create evidential visual recordings of the procedures.

Responsibility for maintaining operating levels of consumables within the unit, ensuring that orders are placed to restock the consumables when necessary

To act as the first point of contact for Sussex Police and outside agencies regarding any ID related issues.

In your role as an E-FIT officer you will be responsible for:

Providing information in the most suitable format utilising imaging tools and software. The software used will be specialist.

Producing a computer generated facial image as described by a witness in order that the identification of an offender may be obtained.

Advising and assisting in all aspects of investigations regarding facial identification matters by informing Investigating Officers of all ranks in relation to tactical and legislative issues.

Ensuring compliance with the relevant national NPCC guidelines on Facial Identification and legislation most notably PACE.

Research new methods in Facial Identification and how these will affect Sussex Police’s ability to investigate crime. Ensure that the Force is correctly briefed regarding this issue.

Developing and delivering training in the use of Facial Imaging and advise on current legislation.

Liaising with stakeholders and undertake Intelligence Development as directed.

 

Skills & Experience

You will need:

  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written and should possess Grade C, GCSE in English or equivilant.
  • Good computer skills, with previous experience of accessing and interrogating databases
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team. You will need to be able to plan, manage and prioritise your workload while responding flexibly to changing demands.
  • Good administrative and organisational skills in order to plan and organise effective identification procedures.
  • Have good interpersonal skills with the ability to show empathy with victims of crime whilst remaining polite and professional with suspects.

Additional Requirements:

  • The post holder will be required to wear Sussex Police uniform
  • The current shift pattern involves a mixture of day shifts (0800-1600) and late shifts (1400-2200) over a 4 week period, with 1 on call weekend every 4 weeks.
  • The post holder should be prepared to be flexible at short notice depending on operational demand.
  • The post holder will be willing to travel where necessary to conduct procedures at other locations both within and on occasion outside of the Sussex Police Area.
  • You must have a valid UK Driving licence and be prepared to drive between Police Stations and/or witness locations using Sussex Police Vehicles.
