Role: Assistant Building Engineer

In this role you will assist the Buildings Engineer in delivery of facilities management at all SYP sites within a designated area, having direct contact with customers and contractors.

Key responsibilities:

  • Undertake basic maintenance and repairs to buildings, the plant equipment, and contents.
  • Operation, cleaning and general maintenance of solid fuel boilers, flues, stokers, and boiler house plant.
  • Carry out general routine maintenance on systems, for example valves etc. to heating and chilling systems.
  • Clean and replace filters to ventilation systems as per maintenance schedules.
  • Keep relevant records of checks and repairs to plant.
  • Undertake all duties within the requirements of the Health & Safety at Work Act, assisting SYP in complying with H & S responsibilities for Management of Contractors on site.
  • Maintenance of emergency stand-by batteries and clear blockages from drains, sinks etc.
  • Check, clean and replace light fittings where necessary and replace fuses and plugs to portable appliances.
  • Receive deliveries of petrol and diesel as per the Petroleum Regulations, and maintain relevant records associated with petrol deliveries and dips (as required)

  • Update and manage work through Technology Forge, ensuring work is uploaded, progressed, and closed down as needed.  Liaise with Estates and Facilities Helpdesk team to ensure service is cohesively managed.
  • Provide cover for the designated Building Engineer during all absences.
  • Assist in overseeing and liaising with external contractors who attend designated police buildings to carry out work on the premises/site.
  • Be aware of security of buildings at all times and undertake work outline above on other buildings within the SYP area.

The post-holder will work hours to cover the team core hours of 8am–5pm through participation and use of the flexitime scheme and may be required to work weekends, overtime, public holidays, or outside normal working hours if circumstances require.

Skills and experience:

  • Practical technical experience in building maintenance.
  • Hold, or be willing to be study for, relevant City & Guilds/NVQ qualifications.
  • The ability to use computerised Microsoft Office and Planned Preventive Maintenance software.
  • Ability to travel within the South Yorkshire police area, a driving licence is required and willing to use your own vehicle for work purposes if a force vehicle is not available.

Applicants must meet the minimum requirement checkable history criteria, which must be taken into account for individuals applying to work with South Yorkshire Police in any capacity.
