Location: The role is primarily based within North Yorkshire Police Headquarters, Northallerton, with an expectation you will work across the Evolve estate and with the opportunity for agile working.

Salary: Scale 4-5 £26,106 - £31,296 per annum.

Contract: Permanent

Hours: Full time, 37 hours per week.

We have a unique opportunity for a Paralegal to join Evolve Legal Services where you will be line managed by the Senior Paralegal/Practice Manager and report to the Head of Civil Litigation. You will undertake file casework, research, investigations, and support for court cases for the legal team. You will be required to work across the various hubs of North Yorkshire, Cleveland and Durham.

 

About Evolve Legal Services

Evolve provides in-house legal services to both the Chief Constable and the Police & Crime Commissioner and their staff across North Yorkshire, Cleveland and Durham policing areas.

 

Key services include legal advice, handling and management of all litigation brought against either the Chief Constable or the Commissioner Management of legal risk and of the insurance and self-insurance programme.

 

Key responsibilities:

You will report to the Head of Civil Litigation and other lawyers across all thematic teams as appropriate and operate as a junior legal professional supporting the legal team with contested or noncontentious case. Where necessary and appropriate, to take day to day responsibility for a modest caseload of the most routine files.

 

With appropriate supervision, you will provide support to members of the Legal team by:

  • Ensuring the case management system is up to date, namely opening any new files and managing them going forward, including updating files following any hearings/timetabling.
  • Assisting the Civil Litigation Lawyers across Evolve Legal Services in preparing, organising and planning files and any related research to ensure cases are dealt with swiftly, efficiently and within the required timescales.
  • Undertaking any casework, research or investigations under the supervision of the Civil Litigation Lawyers, as instructed by the Head of the Civil Litigation Team.
  • Undertaking general duties for lawyers across all thematic areas as requested, for example providing support, updating diaries, making appointments, booking Counsel and arranging meetings. 
  • Managing any statistics and figures in relation to civil litigation matters to assist the Head of the Civil Litigation team.

 

Requirements:

To be successful you will:

  • Have relevant/related experience in a legal, criminal justice or other similar regulatory environment (a relevant qualification may be acceptable in lieu of experience).
  • Possess excellent IT skills, in particular MS Office applications.
  • Be able to communicate on a professional basis with colleagues at all levels both within the organisation and with external bodies.
  • Takes personal responsibility in making effective decisions within specified parameters and act on own initiative.
  • Be able to work as an effective team member.
  • Work with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Have excellent planning and organising skills and the ability to multi-task and work to tight deadlines.
