Job Title: Intelligence Analyst – Counter Terrorism Policing

Salary: The starting salary is £38,926, which includes allowances totalling £2,928.

The salary is broken down as £35,998 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale at £38,523. Plus a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

In addition, after two years in post and completion of your IPP (Intelligence Professionalisation Programme) certification, you will be eligible for a pensionable market related allowance (MRA) of £3,000. Existing Intelligence Analysts may be eligible to receive the allowance sooner, depending on experience and commitment to achieving IPP certification. Please note, the value of the MRA is subject to annual review.

Most roles in CTP also attract a shift disturbance allowance of up to 12.5% of your salary.

Location: West Brompton


As an Intelligence Analyst within Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP), you will assess and analyse intelligence to create analytical products which will provide insight to senior CTP leaders to support decision making and drive operational activity. You will be asked to make recommendations to direct the business to mitigate threat, harm and risk.  This includes working across Islamist, Right Wing, Left Wing, Anarchist and Single Issue thematics to understand the threat from Terrorism to the UK.

You will have the option to work either in CTP National Headquarters, analysing strategic threats to the UK or within the London Region (SO15), which responds specifically to the threat of terrorism in the capital. Your role will be pivotal in understanding the threat from terrorism and extremism both in London and across the UK. This will include supporting live counter-terrorism investigations including attack planning in London, or outside the UK where British Nationals are involved.

Key Skills

The post holder will be required to do the following:

  • Collate, evaluate and process data and information for analysis, apply critical thinking methodologies and structured analytical techniques.
  • Produce concise assessments that identify intelligence gaps and generate recommendations.
  • Work to a high level of integrity, routinely handling Secret information.
  • Influence and negotiate with Senior Leaders and decision makers.
  • Clearly present and explain your analytical products to internal and external audiences.
  • Work both independently and as part of a larger team.
  • Undertake continuous professional development, including working towards IPP certification (Intelligence Professionalisation Programme) within two years.

Vetting

This post requires access to the most sensitive intelligence material on a daily basis. Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo National Security Vetting (NSV) Developed Vetting (DV) level before taking up the post.

Additionally, this material is of particular sensitivity to the UK and its distribution must be restricted to UK nationals. In approved circumstances dual nationals (of which one element is British) may also be granted access. However, in the event that potential conflicts of interest cannot be managed the post holder will not be able to see the intelligence material and will not be able to perform their duties. For the purpose of safeguarding national security and in line with Cabinet Office Policy, supported by Section 82(2) to (4) of the Police Reform Act (2002), applicants who do not hold or acquire Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e)) OR Developed Vetting (DV) clearance and meet the nationality requirements cannot be offered the post.

Application Process

The application process will include three phases, which are:

  • Online psychometric test (assessing deductive and inductive reasoning)
  • Paper sift (CV and personal statement)
  • In person assessment centre (which will include an analytical exercise followed by an interview)

Psychometric testing

The psychometric testing is completed online and will take less than 1 hour. You will get 10 days to complete the test from the day you are sent the details of the test. You will only have one attempt to complete it and will need to complete it in one go.

What is the itinerary for the assessment centre?

  1. Arrival, provide ID and proof of address.
  2. Candidates are given 1 hour to conduct the analytical exercise.
  3. Candidates are then required to present their findings to the assessment panel for 5-10 minutes.
  4. Break.
  5. Candidates will be given the interview questions for 10 mins prior to the interview.
  6. Interview (lasting approx. 45mins).
  7. Assessment centre concludes.
