Job Title: NPCC/HMPPS Police Advisor
Rank: Detective Inspector. If you are applying on temporary promotion, please ensure that you are eligible to apply. This role is open to Detective Sergeants supported for temporary promotion. For MPS Officers, this role is open to substantive Detective Inspectors, those on the Select List, and substantive Detective Sergeants.
Location: Remote working nationally within UK. NPCC is currently based in close proximity to St James Park underground station, London and therefore occasional travel will be required to this premise and other Police locations across the UK. We encourage applications from candidates living across the UK. Further details on flexible arrangements will be discussed at interview stage.
Contract: Secondment until 31/03/2026 (with the potential for further extension subject to funding and performance).
Allowances: Secondees from the national forces/organisations, outside of the London area, are entitled to claim travel expenses incurred for the role.

NPCC SERIOUS ORGANISED CRIME TEAM
The NPCC Serious Organised Crime Team plays a crucial role in communicating the collective views and action of UK police chiefs to the public, government, and stakeholders, building and maintaining confidence in policing at the national level and supporting effective engagement with stakeholders.
THE ROLE
The role supports the Strategic Police Advisors (SOC in Prisons & (Intelligence) and Criminal Justice & Partnerships (two Superintendents) with joint work driving strategic engagement and tactical delivery between NPCC and HMPPS and more broadly across policing to combat crime linked to, or occurring within the prison environment, or amongst people managed under probation supervision. The role includes working directly to the NPCC Lead for HMPPS, DCC Michaela Kerr, supporting her to deliver broader policing priorities across areas such as SOC in Prisons (MARSOC), crime in prisons, intelligence, Serious Crime Prevention Orders (SCPOs) and Regional Prison Intelligence Unit coordination. The postholder will be embedded within the HMPPS Corruption, Crime and Policing Unit and will be expected to support the Superintendents in national coordination activities. The role is jointly funded by HMPPS and NPCC.
The postholder will assist in the development of sustainable interfacing between the NPCC and HMPPS National Security Group across the range of each agency’s priorities. This will include considering effective governance arrangements for future engagement between Policing and HMPPS and the specific delivery of recommendation 2b of the NSPARC Policy Lab report into SOC In Prisons and Probation. The post holder will also be required to support work advancing the recommendations of the NPCC review in relation to the MARSOC programme.
The successful candidate would need to have the following experiences and skills:
- You will have experience in influencing and negotiating within partnership working, and the skills to support engagement at regional and national level.
- You will have an understanding of the operational context for Policing in relation to serious and organised crime, intelligence and prison crime.
- You will have experience of, or demonstrate aptitude towards, project coordination and progressing multiple workstreams to conclusion and their administration.
- Some knowledge of CT Policing and HMPPS structures and operating structures is beneficial.
