Police Constable Entry Programme (PCEP) – Uniform Constable

About Direct Entry Uniform Constables

This route is for people who want to be a Uniform Police Constable through the 2 year Police Constable Entry Programme – Uniform Constable.

Salary : Starting Salary: £29,907 per annum (increasing to a minimum of £32,427 after 2 years, and £48,231 after 6 years if you remain in the police constable rank, subject to performance).

Few jobs can be more rewarding than that of a Police Officer. From day one, you’ll be helping fight crime and protecting the public, making our communities safer and feeling safer.

It’s much more than blue lights and fast cars. It’s protecting the vulnerable when they need you most. It’s working in partnership to tackle serious and organised crime and it’s making critical decisions that will change lives forever. You will investigate a wide range of crimes such as burglaries and assaults, going that extra mile to ensure the best chance of securing a conviction.

Policing is both challenging and rewarding. You’ll be tested, more so than you have before – resilience is key, alongside your ability to empathise, listen and communicate.

It’s a position of responsibility, of trust, of purpose. Above all, it’s working as part of a family, a policing family. A team that pulls together as one, rising to the challenge every single day.

We are looking for the very best people – good all-round communicators with a calm and confident personality; problem solvers, team players and people who easily build relationships, respect other people and appreciate views from the 2.2 million residents across our diverse communities in West Yorkshire. This will involve working 24 hr shift patterns, including nights and weekends, front line policing with Response and neighbourhood policing teams.

If this sounds like you, we welcome your application.

Upon appointment to the role you will complete the initial training phase (17 weeks) at the West Yorkshire Police Training facilities in Wakefield. After this time, you will then move to work within one of the five operational policing districts in West Yorkshire; Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds or Wakefield.

Once at district you will be working in a uniform operational role alongside experienced Police Officers, learning and applying core policing skills; you will have the opportunity to work in a policing specialism such as Neighbourhood Policing or Response. During this time, you will work a range of shifts 24 hours/7 days per week.

This opportunity is open to all candidates over the age of 17 who meet the eligibility criteria but who do not wish to work towards academic qualifications in tandem with becoming a police officer.

Eligibility

All applicants for any police officer pathway must meet the following criteria at the application stage:

• be at least 17 years of age, 18 at the time you are appointed to the role

• residency - have been a UK resident for the last three years

• be a British Citizen, or an EU/European Economic Area (EEA) national, Commonwealth citizen or foreign national with Indefinite Leave to Remain or Settled Status and no restrictions on your stay in the United Kingdom

• have a Level 2 / GCSE (A*-C or 9-4) or equivalent qualification in English Language and Maths.

• possess a level 3 qualification within the meaning of Section 3 of the Education and Skills Act 2008 or equivalent (i.e. 2 x A/AS Levels Grade A to E, GNVQ/NVQ Level 3, BTEC Level 3 or equivalent). You must have received a confirmed result to be eligible to apply, we are not accepting predicted grades at this time.

• if you do not hold a Level 3 qualification but can demonstrate having the qualifications and/or experience as detailed in Police Regulations 2003, Regulation 10, Annex BA (i.e. you are a serving Special Constable or PCSO and have attained independent patrol status) then consideration will be given to your application.

• holding a full manual UK or EU driving licence by the time of formal offer will be an advantage.

• be ready, willing and able to pass the job related fitness test (follow link: https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/jobs-volunteer/medical-fitness-standards-preparing-for-your-assessment#fitness)

In addition to the above you will be required to meet the usual Police Officer eligibility criteria (follow link: https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/jobs-volunteer/police-officers/police-constable-entry-programme-uniform)

Our expectations are high and you should expect to undergo a rigorous assessment process ,following which you will attend an in-Force interview. Should you be successful in all elements of the assessment process you will undergo checks such as a medical assessment and vetting before a job offer is made. The recruitment process can be demanding and will require your commitment to be responsive to all requests for information and attendance at appointments in a timely manner. Failing to do so could impact your progression through the process.

In return, you will receive first class training, an excellent salary and pension benefits, and become part of a large Police Force which brings fantastic prospects in terms of career development and future promotional opportunities.

We are also currently recruiting for our Police Constable Entry Programme - Detective Constable (PCEP DC) entry route. Please take a look at the information available on our website about each role before deciding which route you would like to apply to join https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/jobs-volunteer/police-officers
