Salary: The starting salary is £40,907.20, which includes allowances totalling £2,928 plus a 20% shift allowance.
The salary is broken down as £31,880 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £34,108. Plus a 20% shift allowance, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.
Location: Lambeth.
What we do
Royalty and Specialist Protection (RaSP) provides personal close & mobile protection to members of the Royal Family and Ministerial VIPs in the U.K. and abroad. RaSP also provide protection to various foreign dignitaries visiting the UK. RaSP Residential provides armed protection to London palaces, Windsor Castle and various Scottish residences.
Job Purpose
The role of Weapons Issuing Officer (WIO) is vitally important to the day to day smooth running of the command and delivery of our protection package. It is important that we enable our firearms officers to be equipped with weapons and kit that they need in a timely manner. Crucially the issuing of this kit is never issued at the cost of safety, which is paramount, and therefore the successful candidate will need to be alert and highly motivated to carry out this role.
**Posts are at LXHQ, which is located on Lambeth Road, but successful candidates will be expected to backfill other armouries across London and the UK when operationally required to do so**
The post applied for will be shift work consisting of 12 hour days and 12 hour nights, covering 24/7 across week days and weekend and will receive a 20% shift disturbance allowance.
Key Responsibilities
What does the average day look like? Your core duties will include:
- The storage, issue and reception of weapons and ammunition for a dedicated team of Authorised Firearms Officers (AFOs) and Close Protection (CP) officers.
- To conduct a comprehensive handover with the incoming WIO and record its detail.
- Ensuring only authorised staff are issued with appropriate weaponry and equipment.
- Accurate record keeping and auditing process in relation to RaSP weapons, ammunition and disposal.
- Ensuring strict compliance with MPS regulations around health and safety and firearms policies – see PUoF and Taser SOPs.
- Weapons cleaning and audit completion.
- The identification and reporting of defective weapons and equipment.
- Monthly download of MPS Tasers in line with policy.
- Ensuring the working environment of the armoury is clean and safe so it is suitable for its purpose of firearms storage and issue, dealing promptly with issues as they arise by reporting them and mitigating any risk.
- Complying with and enforcing all local instructions relating to RaSP armoury procedures.
- Replacement of batteries in weapon sighting systems and TASERs.
- Assisting with transport of weapons and ammunition to other armouries within the MPS and Outside of the Metropolitan Police District (OMPD) including Scotland.
- Staffing of the mobile armoury when it is deployed within the MPS and OMPD
Communication and relationship skills:
- Effective communication skills. Ability to explain things clearly either verbally or in writing in the most appropriate style, tone or format.
- Ability to complete simple mathematical equations to be able to complete the daily audit.
- Good interpersonal skills and team working skills with the willingness to support others and share ideas.
- Must be flexible when meeting operational needs and expectations and willing to work outside of the Metropolitan Police District (OMPD) in Scotland and other locations around the UK when the mobile armoury is deployed.
- Planning and organisational skills.
- Creative approach to problem solving and be able to keep a calm when problems arise.
- Highly motivated, taking a proactive approach to work including a strong desire to meet deadlines and deliver quality products.
- Ability to work autonomously.
- Able to challenge wrong doing, and point out errors if officers are seen to be working outside of the standard operating procedures.
Vetting:
This post requires access to the most sensitive intelligence material on a daily basis. Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo National Security Vetting (NSV) Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e)) level before taking up the post.
