Chief Constables' Message

We really welcome your interest in joining our Police Force. It is a privilege to lead the teams in Surrey Police and Sussex Police who continuously work selflessly and tirelessly in order to keep people in our counties safe.

We are looking for talented and inspirational people who put the needs of the public at the heart of everything that they do and who want to make a difference. If you feel you are that person then we want to hear from you.

We wish you all the very best with your application.

Chief Constable Tim De Meyer & Chief Constable Jo Shiner

The Role & Key Responsibilities

From your first day with us you will be part of a policing family making a real difference.

It is our mission to identify and protect vulnerable people, prevent and respond to harm and keep people safe.

In this role you will be supporting and developing a team of decision makers undertaking checks of police systems in support of the Disclosure and Barring Service. You will supervise the Sussex DBS Unit on a day to day basis, allocating tasks, supporting, advising and motivitating the unit's staff.

The DBS provides a vital service to the public, enabling employers working with children and vulnerable adults to have confidence that their workforce is a safe and secure environment. It is essential that checks conducted by local forces are completed accurately and in a timely manner to ensure that applicants are cleared to commence important jobs. In some cases, there is a need to make disclosures to keep the public safe. In either case, there are complex considerations within the national DBS Quality Assurance Framework and the team gathers and reviews the information necessary to ensure these reviews are accurate, balanced, fair and relevant.

As a supervisor you will:

  • Be the first line manager to the team, conducting regular 1:1/wellbeing meetings and being the first point of contact
  • Monitor and support performance across the team
  • Support the unit's training officer with the planning and delivery of mandatory and developmental training
  • Support the team leader with regular reviews of force specific policies, always seeking to drive efficiencies
  • Plan and lead team meetings
  • Review planned disclosures, ensuring they are balanced and accurate, before passing for final sign-off by the Chief Officer Delegate
  • Liaise with and support the DSB Audit Officer to ensure a strong quality assurance regime is maintained
  • Liaise with the DBS Strategy and Compliance Unit and Police Performance Team to ensure best practice is followed
Skills & Experience

    • Education to GCSE Grade C, including English Language
    • Evidence of previous experience in a supervisory or management capacity within an office environment.
    • Evidence of previous experience in a safeguarding environment
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, together with excellent verbal and written communication. English spelling and grammar needs to be of a very high standard with good attention to detail.
    • Excellent communication skills with proven and well evidenced experience of producing clear, concise and accurate written records.
    • An understanding of the DBS process and supporting legislation (desirable).
    • Strong organisation and planning skills with the ability to work under pressure.
    • Ability to work independently and be adaptable and resilient to working in a busy environment.
    • Excellent standard of IT literacy particularly within a Microsoft environment, i.e. Word, Excel etc.
