Alliance Forensic Collision Investigator
This is an exciting opportunity to join our small team of forensic specialists, with posts available in Bodmin or Exeter.
Forensic Collision Investigators (FCIs) attend the scenes of the most serious collisions and sometimes other serious crimes throughout the Alliance. Their role is to gather evidence from the scene and vehicles and produce forensic reports as expert witnesses for the investigation.
This field of science is constantly developing and FCIs use laser scanners and digital cameras to gather detailed evidence from the scene. The subsequent analysis of the scene evidence requires a thorough understanding of maths and physics to A level standard and the ability to use logic to apply this knowledge to real life scenarios. University hosted FCI training is provided as part of the role, which includes attendance on some residential elements of the courses. This training will allow you to reach the expected minimum qualification - the Certificate of Higher Education – after around two years of studying alongside workplace learning. There are opportunities for further qualifications to be obtained and there are several additional training courses you will be expected to attend as you build your expertise as an FCI.
The work is challenging, both physically and mentally and involves covering a wide geographic area, 24/7 every day of the year, working as part of three teams on a three week shift pattern including on call. The nature of this work means there will be regular exposure to traumatic and disturbing circumstances , so a high degree of emotional resilience is essential.
As well as the minimum requirement for GCSE maths and physics, a maths screening assessment will be used as part of the application process to ensure you are at the required academic level for the university course.
Whilst part-time applications are welcome, during the 2 year period aligning to the training, working hours will be full-time, but may be considered for reduction on completion of the course.
