We have an exciting opportunity to join our Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT) Collaboration as a CCTV & Video Technical Manager, based at Gablecross in Swindon or Waterwells in Gloucester.  The role is varied, interesting and rewarding aimed at delivering justice for the victims of crimes, particularly homicides.

In this role you will be first line manager to CCTV & Video Investigators, providing operational oversight and leadership to your team. You will be responsible for technical and investigative standards, quality assurance and meeting judicial deadlines.  This requires an excellent use of grammar, attention to detail and the ability to prioritise your team’s workload across several active investigations.

You will perform the function of CCTV coordinator, often in a fast paced and dynamic environment.  You will be decision making, tasking and problem solving in time critical situations.  This requires excellent interpersonal skills, experience of investigations and the ability to lead a team with a collaborative approach.

You will be a technical lead and subject matter expert for CCTV & Video related recovery and processing, requiring an advanced IT skillset including the ability to install, maintain and troubleshoot hardware and software, and effectively engage with third party IT practitioners and forensic experts.

You will attend the scene or surrounding areas of homicides and major incidents to ensure CCTV related material is secured in a time critical manner, liaising face to face with members of the public and third parties.  You will also attend Crown Court to present evidence and support your team.  Such deployments can require robust and adaptable communication skills whilst remaining calm under pressure.

Your daily tasks can be unpredictable, demanding flexibility and resilience. There is often a requirement to work additional hours at short notice.

The Major Crime Investigation Team is a three-force collaboration between Avon and Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire police, and as such you will be required to support operations across all three policing areas. Your usual place of work will be in Swindon or Gloucester, however you will at times be deployed to another MCIT hub or anywhere within the collaboration area.  You will require access to the standalone CCTV servers located within the MCIT hubs, making this a fixed position with little or no opportunity to work from home or at an alternative police premises. You will be employed by Avon & Somerset Constabulary.

Main responsibilities:

  • Subject Matter Expert and Technical Lead for the MCIT CCTV & Video team.
  • First line manger responsibilities including welfare, training and tasking.
  • Coordinate and oversee the CCTV & Video element of Major Crime investigations.
  • Quality control investigative products and maintain standards.
  • Meet judicial deadlines and attend Crown Court to present evidence.
  • Oversight of all MCIT CCTV & Video related forensic submissions.
  • Attend crime scenes and liaise with members of the public including face to face interaction.
  • Assist in creating and implementing policy and procedures to comply with legislation.
  • Due to the nature of work being undertaken, there will be exposure to highly distressing material such as pictures, videos and audio depicting murder, violence, sudden and accidental death. All staff must complete mandatory counselling sessions.

Skills, experience and qualifications required:

Essential

  • Hold a Full UK Driving Licence and be able to travel around the MCIT collaboration area.
  • Excellent and robust interpersonal skills, both verbal and written and the ability to present to a wide audience.
  • Ability to lead a team with a collaborative approach, along with strong decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience of investigation and the prosecution process.
  • Experience of developing and training others.
  • Excellent technical abilities, including installing, maintaining and troubleshooting hardware and software.
  • Experience of working with and maintaining a Local Area Network (LAN).
  • Experience of writing reports and/or statements of evidence.
  • Experience of being able to prioritise and manage your own workload as well as that of others.
  • Experience of coordinating a team and tasks in a fast-paced environment whilst meeting time critical deadlines.
  • Requires strong written communication skills, excellent grammar and presentation skills, and attention to detail.

 

Additional information: 

CCTV recovery involves working outdoors in all weather conditions and at a range of locations.  CCTV units can be in hard to access areas such as loft spaces, or within crime scenes.

The shift pattern is a combination of day shifts 0800-1800 and late shifts 1400-2200 shifts. You will be required to work 1 weekend in every 4.

To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 5 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 5 years.

Work on a bank or public holiday as part of the normal working week will be compensated in line with conditions of service. At least one member of the team is required to work every bank holiday including Christmas day.
