We are looking for a Firearms Enquiry Officer who will be responsible for tasks associated with the grant, renewal, refusal and revocation of firearm and shotgun certificates, registered firearms dealers, home office approved rifle clubs, explosives and lost/stolen weapons.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct visits and suitability investigations into any person applying for the grant or renewal of a Shotgun, Firearms, Explosives or Registered Firearms Dealership certificate.
  • Conduct inspections of Registered Firearms Dealers properties including a complete premises search.
  • Conduct inspections of Home Office approved clubs
  • Conduct inspections of Explosives storage sites in line with Explosives regulation as deputies of the Health and Safety Inspector (Explosives).
  • Appropriately manage routine investigations into certificate holder suitability including serious and complex investigations. 
  • Interview and obtain statements from complainants, witnesses and ‘routine investigation’ suspects, and assist with the interview of ‘Complex and Serious’ Investigation suspects relating to Firearms Licensing offences. 
  • Operate appropriate SYP and external computer systems to research, gather intelligence and maintain records regarding individuals and investigations.
  • Conduct investigations; preserve and recover evidence. 
  • Systematically seek, gather, evaluate, and present evidence as part of investigations.
  • Use appropriate interview techniques e.g. comply with legal provisions for interviewing. 
  • Prepare investigation reports and case files.
  • Prepare for and participate in multi-agency meetings/case conferences, providing accurate and relevant information. 
  • Record reported crimes in accordance with the NCRS. 
  • Conduct investigations in accordance with relevant complaints and misconduct legislation, including the Police Reform Act 2002, and maintain accurate progress logs of the investigation, including contact with complainants, witnesses and interested persons.
  • Liaise with other agencies and colleagues on behalf of the complainant e.g. Victim Support, Social Services etc. to provide care for vulnerable persons, victims and witnesses.
  • Liaise with CPS and give evidence in Court (criminal cases and Firearms Licensing appeals)
  • Conduct arrests of persons wanted on warrants.

Skills and experience:

  • Successful completion of the College of Policing Firearms Enquiry Officer Portfolio.
  • Administrative and computer experience, including the ability to update and interrogate systems.
  • Must hold a clean, valid driving licence.
  • Able to produce clear and concise reports and other documents within best practice procedures.
  • As part of this role the wearing of Personal Issue Body Armour will be required on some occasions.
  • Successful completion of Health and safety Explosive’s liaison officer course.

Eligibility:

Applicants must meet the minimum requirement checkable history criteria, which must be taken into account for individuals applying to work with South Yorkshire Police in any capacity. A minimum checkable history of 5 years is required for this role and successfully undergoing recruitment vetting procedure is a pre-requisite of employment with South Yorkshire Police.
