Recruitment to the South Yorkshire Volunteer Police Cadets is now open to all young people who live in South Yorkshire.  You need to be 15 years old by 31 August 2025 and no older than 17 years of age by 31 May 2026. 

Applications close on 30 April 2025 and the completed forms will be paper sifted in early May. All candidates invited to interview will be notified by email the week commencing 19 May 2025. 

Interviews will take place on Wednesday evenings during June. 

All successful candidates must attend a two-day mandatory induction programme.

  • The 1st induction day will be on either 31 July or 18 August 2025
  • The 2nd induction day will be on either 1 August, 19 August or 21 August 2025

Cadets meet every Wednesday evening 1830-2000 during term-time and there is an expectation that you will attend every week. There is a cadet group in each of the four South Yorkshire Districts. (Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield) 

The scheme aims to provide a safe space for young people to develop employability skills through activities to enhance team working, communication and build confidence. Cadets will also have visits from policing departments such as the Dog Training, Roads Policing and Crime Scene Investigation. 

As a cadet you will also be able to volunteer for other activities working with District officers and PCSOs in the evening or on a weekend for example Remembrance Parades, Rotherham and Penistone Shows, Test Purchasing and leaflet drops. 

Uniform will be issued to successful cadets, but plain black shoes/boots will need to be provided by the applicant. 

Eligibility:

Applicants must meet the minimum requirement checkable history criteria, which must be taken into account for individuals applying to work with South Yorkshire Police in any capacity. A minimum checkable history of 3 years is required for this role and successfully undergoing recruitment vetting procedure is a pre-requisite of employment with South Yorkshire Police.

Officers, staff, and volunteers of South Yorkshire Police are permitted to have tattoos visible whilst on duty provided the tattoo is not considered to be unacceptable or otherwise inappropriate. Tattoos will be reviewed as part of the recruitment and selection process.
