Job Title: Collection & Delivery Supervisor

Salary: The starting salary is £38,926, which includes allowances totalling £2,928.

The salary is broken down as £35,998 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £38,523 Plus, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Vehicle Recovery Examination Services (VRES) is a key part of the MPS drive to tackle vehicle crime on the streets of London working in partnership with several external agencies and MPS contractors to remove, recover, restore and dispose of vehicles that are involved in collisions, those involved in serious and organised crime that require forensic examinations or those that are seized under Police powers for no insurance or unlicensed. We support Frontline policing and operate 24/7/365, we have our own unique in-house policing team, command-and-control team and Collection & Delivery team. 

We operate out of two forensic car pounds, Perivale, and Charlton. Processing over 40,000 vehicles, we deal with everything, from two-wheel bikes all the way up to and including HGV’s. Our work has a direct impact upon the service the MPS delivers Londoners, and it is vital we can continue to deliver this service to meet current and future demands. Right now, it is a particularly exciting time to join the team. We are currently undergoing a business review aimed at Collection and Delivery of all MPS Fleet Vehicles across London and identifying smarter ways of working with potential new growth opportunities both internal and externally. We are looking for a highly qualified, experienced, and responsible individual to join our team as a Collection & Delivery Driver. This unique role will provide the role holder to a front seat in supporting the delivery of our service to various policing units including, but not limited to, Frontline Policing, Counter Terrorism and Specialist Operations in collecting and delivering operating MPS Fleet Vehicles for scheduled maintenance and vehicle replacements. 

The role of a Collection & Delivery Supervisor is an incredibly demanding role, but you will be rewarded with an immensely satisfying and varied job that is never dull, as well as having the opportunity to make a real difference to the community, to London and the Met itself. The police vehicle fleet is an important physical asset. It enables officers and staff to do their job, carries key equipment required, and provides safe transportation for the public / prisoners. The role holder will work within the Collection & Delivery pillar of Vehicle Recovery Examination Services supporting our colleagues in Fleet Services by continuing to deliver their objective of “Keeping the Met Moving” which supports the Commissioners New Met for London plan of More Trust, Less Crime, High Standards. The complex need of modern policing requires a wide range of vehicle types.  

The MPS operate a fleet of over 5,200 assets on the road and river, as well as over 1,000 pedal cycles. London is the most complex and diverse city in the UK, and our fleet is reflective of that. We currently have over 220 different types of vehicles supporting all operational commands including armed response vehicles, HGVs, patrol cars, motorbikes and pedal cycles. Customers can be broadly grouped into three strategic pillars – Frontline Policing, Met Ops & Performance, and Counter Terrorism / Specialist Operations. Collectively this covers Pan London requirements as well as National CT responsibilities.  

The role holder will be responsible for a team that will deliver an efficient end-to-end collection and delivery service for a varied fleet of specialist vehicles within the MPS whilst supporting frontline operational policing with a safe, well-maintained and available fleet at the lowest possible cost, which meets the operational needs of the MPS and externally set standards. Your role will involve effectively managing your team’s time, monitoring their performance, and providing the necessary support to handle public interactions professionally. 

Additionally, you will ensure compliance with policies and procedures, and handle inquiries from internal teams, external partners and other agencies. Your leadership will be vital in maintaining efficiency and safety across the operation. As a leader, you will provide ongoing mentorship and development opportunities to foster a high-performing and motivated team, leading by example through professionalism and problem solving in a fast-paced environment. You will also identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and productivity. 

 In times of crisis, you will lead the team in responding effectively to emergency situations, developing contingency plans for high-volume periods or unexpected challenges, ensuring minimal disruption to operations. This is a dynamic and multifaceted role where your leadership, organisational skills and commitment to operational excellence will be vital to the success of the operation. 

As a Collection & Delivery Supervisor, you will be expected to: 

  • Lead and coordinate a team of Collection and Delivery drivers to meet all KPIs in line with the delivery of the movement plan.
  • Coordinate the work of drivers, despatching them to allocated job and maintaining communication to ensure that collections and deliveries are carried out in a consistent manner and best practice is applied. 
  • Motivate team members, building effective relationships with drivers and building a team ethos, setting an open and safe forum for expressing concerns and treating meetings as a learning opportunity.
  • Develop and implement the Collection and Delivery Plan, forecasting levels and adapting to shifting demands to ensure an efficient service.
  • Set the team KPIs, review and track driver performance levels, submitting regular performance statistics on KPIs for report purposes to maintain quality service delivery. 
  • Adhere to the MPS H&S policy concerning vehicle movements and the timely collection and delivery of vehicles between end users and the workshop 
  • Engage with a variety of stakeholders including end users, workshop and other Fleet teams to ensure a joined up approach for the collection and delivery service
  • Maintain a high level of driver competence and operational excellence when performing their duties and manage quality of service issues. Monitor driver requirements and accurately record and report endorsements, taking appropriate action where drivers fail to comply to ensure adherence to MPS Driving Standards and compliance procedures through regular one-to-one meetings. 
  • Determine training needs, organise appropriate training interventions in line with personal development plans and future business requirements. 
  • Be adaptable to a busy and changing environment.
