The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Vanguard Road Safety Team, based at Burpham, specifically created to address a core group of “Fatal Five” motoring offences that contribute to collisions and casualties on the roads in Surrey.

Vanguard was incepted in 2022 to deliver additional traffic enforcement, publicity and education programmes aimed at reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on Surrey’s roads.

The team deploy to specific hotspot locations around Surrey to enforce causation factor offences as well target individuals or groups who are linked by intelligence and research who pose a risk to themselves or others by their road related behaviour.

The team is supported by a Researcher and a Communications Officer with a view to positively influencing road user attitudes and behaviour.

The enforcement team will operate marked and unmarked cars and motorbikes, equipped with ANPR, Cleartone, PUMA and other role specific equipment and technology.

Working closely with the Roads Policing Unit, they will proactively target all road related offences to reduce road casualties, disrupt criminality and combat anti-social road use.

Applications are invited from hard working, dynamic and enthusiastic substantive Constables.

There is no requirement for you to have an Advanced driving ticket on applying, however all successful candidates will have to pass their advanced ticket and any offer will be subject to this.

Successful candidates will be required to attend and pass the strategic fast roads awareness course and Roads Policing skills course.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to one of the two Sergeants, you will proactively target all road related offences to reduce casualties, disrupt criminality and combat anti-social road use. The team will work closely with Roads Policing and Casualty Reduction Officers to support NPCC and ROADPOL campaigns.

Skills & Experience

Applicants must be substantive Constables and it is essential that they have completed a standard car response course (and be compliant with Surrey’s current refresher standards), together with staff safety and first aid training.

Applicants must hold a full and valid UK driving licence with any DVLA endorsements disclosed to PSD/PVI/Head of driver training.

 

  • You should have experience in responding to incidents and application of the National Decision Model.
  • You will need excellent interpersonal skills, not only for dealing with offenders, but when in a different setting – engaging with people at motorsport and community events where education and engagement will be key.
  • You will be expected to be able to evidence experience in dealing with the Fatal 5 offences and have an aptitude for road safety matters and legislation.
  • You must be able to communicate effectively, setting out logical arguments clearly, and adapting language, form and message to meet the needs of different people / audiences – this will be especially key when the team attend motorsport or community events.
  • Constables will need to be proficient in Case File management and file builds to high standards.
  • Applicants will need to work effectively within a team environment, but also be self-motivated when working by themselves.

Ideally, applicants would also hold Initial Phase Pursuit (IPP) authorisation, be an advanced driver and Taser trained however officers who do not currently hold these can still apply, but the offer will be subject to passing the IPP and advanced driver courses.
