About the role

We are looking for people who share our values of impartiality, integrity, public service and transparency, and who share our high standards of behaviour.

Whether it's interviewing a suspect in custody, attending a warrant, and helping to search for evidence in a suspect's house or workplace or reviewing CCTV footage, you'll be at the heart of the investigation.

LCIs are required to work both day and evening shifts, including weekends, so flexibility is essential. A full driving licence is also mandatory. In addition to your W7 grade pay, you will receive a 14% shift allowance.

You will be based out of one of our three hubs, Swindon, Melksham, or Amesbury.

An LCI role offers great opportunities for development once you have achieved your PIP Level 1 (investigators) accreditation, you could go on to be an LCI supervisor or join one of our specialised departments such as the Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT), Serious and Organised Crime Unit (SOCU), Public Protection Department, CID or Complex Fraud amongst others.

What you will be doing 

You will be part of a team providing a service investigating volume crime whilst working alongside Constable(s) and others within the investigation gathering and investigation chain. You will work closely with the Community Policing and Neighbourhood teams, Crime Investigation Teams and CID.

As part of your role, you will be required to:

- Question suspects, therefore, you will need to have an enquiring mind to ask questions and get to the truth

- Interview victims and witnesses, so it’s important you can show strong empathy, professionalism, and first-class customer service

- Examine CCTV and review statements to piece together what happened, so you need to be patient and thorough

- Handle evidence and prepare reports, with a meticulous and transparent mindset.

- Deal with any enquiry allocated to the post holder in an accurate and timely manner to ensure it is properly completed for submission to the Case Manager or direct to CPS when appropriate

- Present the evidence as required at Crown Court, Magistrate Court or other Court of Law.

- Liaise with other forces and outside agencies in relation to the gathering and preparation of evidence.

About you and your experience 

We are searching for confident people who:

- Enquiring mind to be able to ask the right questions

- Methodical approach to your work

- Work under pressure and to very tight deadlines usually set by the Court

- Good communication skills, both written and spoken - contacts will include CPS, solicitors, doctors, judges, forensic scientists, local hospitals, witnesses, armed forces, DVLA etc.

- Ability to work unsupervised and as part of a team.

- Flexible and creative approach to problem solving.

- Attention to detail when reading a file is essential - ability to assess the accuracy of contentious information.

- Confidence if required to give evidence at court either locally or elsewhere

- Calm and confident in potential conflict situations

The below skills are desired but not essential:

- Previous experience of the judicial systems essential (work within a police, solicitors or criminal courts environment)

- Experience in investigating matters and carrying out interviews

- Competent in the use of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel

- Willingness to attend and complete Institute of Legal Executives Course if required

- Interviewing skills - ability to conduct an interview to the point of reporting a person for an offence
