Salary: The starting salary is £47,060, which includes allowances totalling £2,928.
The salary is broken down as £44,132 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £52,652. Plus, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Summary of Role
There has never been a better time to come and work as a Commercial Consultant within the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS). At the heart of Commercial Services, is the newly created Commercial Assurance team, driving change across the MPS. This role sits within this team and focuses on commercial strategy, standards and assurance, commercial risk reporting and management. The role offers plenty of scope for leadership opportunities in this area. The role-holder will get to work with organisations across the public sector, including those within the Greater London Authority, and work across critical procurements and contracts, which protect Londoners. We are looking for someone who is diligent, technically minded and analytical. This role would suit someone who has experience in at least one of the following and is looking to develop their skills in these other areas:
- Commercial experience
- Technical experience (data analysis, reporting and systems migration)
- Strategic and business change process experience
- Risk management experience
Role Description
In this role, you will support the Commercial Assurance Lead to deliver an evidence-based performance, risk and assurance service as part of a governance cycle, which provides high quality, insightful analysis to support the delivery of MPS’ Objectives.
You will strive to deliver a business intelligence service to identify emerging risks and provide assurance.
You will be responsible for analysing and reporting on commercial risk for the MPS’ third-party arrangements. You will be working closely with The Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) and ensuring compliance with all relevant contracts and maintaining knowledge of all rules relating to and affecting commercial activity within MPS.
You will be responsible for leading on collaborative projects with the Met’s Business Services department; continuously improving our sourcing to payment processes and ensuring the organisation is prepared for the transition between our old and new Enterprise Resource Planning and Source to Payment systems.
In this role, you will be contributing to delivering Commercial Excellence for the MPS, providing a customer focused service, understanding the business need and stakeholder drivers, with the aim of becoming a trusted commercial advisor. You will also develop relationships with MPS’ key and strategic suppliers, driving value for money and risk management excellence across the category. You will be operating within a complex organisational or political environment and understanding the strategic context surrounding the MPS and its effect on outcome delivery, associated risks and learning.
Responsibilities of the role
What does the average day look like? Your core duties will include (but are not limited to):
- Understand MPS’ commercial strategy and feed into planning based on commercial approaches that deliver requirements that are in line with the business’ needs, category strategies and market trends
- Analyse performance, risk and assurance through the provision of high-quality guidance and insightful analytical products that enable leaders to understand the performance, risk and assurance environment in which they are operating. This includes the management of supply network risk.
- Support audit activities to ensure they are facilitated and executed to a high standard.
- Undertake governance and assurance activities and utilise these to highlight areas of risk or make recommendations for change.
- Ensure clear communication of regulatory, legislative and best practice changes and their obligations under these changes, and how they will impact Commercial Services and the wider MPS business.
- Aid in the development of policy and strategy in order to bolster commercial assurance practices
- Analyse and assess supplier risk, and highlight any impact on contingency and business continuity, in order to drive value for money whilst protecting MPS’ risk position.
- Be an advocate to the Commercial team providing support, education and training to staff to build risk awareness within the organisation and then taking steps to mitigate risks.
- Work with and support other commercial colleagues to ensure consistency across the team.
- Provide mentoring and guidance to junior members of the team.
- Work within a secure environment upon sensitive projects as required.
- Facilitating business change processes and continuous improvement to improve our commercial reporting and assurance functionality
- Advising and coordinating our compliance activities- including transparency notices, FOIAs and pipeline publication
