Police Officer Custody Sergeant Transferee

Merseyside Police are looking for Custody Sergeants on transfer or Sergeants wishing to transfer to Merseyside to take up the role as Custody Sergeant.

Why join Merseyside Police

Policing on Merseyside is dynamic, challenging, rewarding and we take pride in everything we do. We are the best performing urban Force as graded by HMICFRS and our strategy is to put the communities of Merseyside first in all we do. We have a strong focus on continuous improvement with particular emphasis on our approach to Reducing Violence Against Women and Girls; Tackling Serious Organised Crime and County Lines; Enhancing our approach to Diversity and Inclusion; and building trust and legitimacy through our approach to Community Engagement.

Merseyside is one of the smallest geographical forces but serves a diverse population in a challenging policing area, responding to almost 1 million calls for service per year. The Force received an additional £12M funding from the Home Office this year to continue the incredibly important work to tackle county lines and serious violence.

Our Force Strategy

We are driven by the current Force Strategy 2020-25 and passionately believe that Community First is absolutely the right thing for our communities, for our partners and for Merseyside Police.

Our vision is to put our communities first – we are committed to preventing crime and anti-social behaviour, through our developing approach to preventative policing, in order that we reduce the number of victims particularly those crimes that cause high harm. We are evolving our approach with the PCC to supporting victims of crime and we are dedicated to bringing more offenders to justice, whilst building in diversionary and preventative approaches.

Why consider working as a Custody Sergeant?

Whilst working in Custody, you will work alongside a small and dedicated team who are responsible for the safety and wellbeing of detainees who enter the custody suite. You will need to leave judgement behind and show empathy at times of challenge.

There are set legal processes you must follow - this means you will acquire an in-depth, specialist knowledge of Police And Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) and Codes of Practice and its applications. Due to the nature of the role, you will become adept at learning how to effectively manage risk whilst being an empathic conflict manger.

You will be involved in the investigative process to ensure successful prosecutions through the correct use of powers and procedures to obtain samples, interview, obtain evidence, bail, and charging. You will have responsibility for the safeguarding and protection of vulnerable persons within the custody environment through partnership working with AA services, EDT, CJHMT, Drugs workers and medical staff.

What can we offer you?

In this role, you will work a 12-hour shift pattern, 4 on, 4 off (2 days, 2 nights) with shift enhancements – this shift pattern may not be for everybody, but it offers a set working pattern and extended periods of rest days - this can be advantageous depending on your life outside of work.

You will be provided with development opportunities and a mentor to support you though training and the skills and knowledge you will learn in this role will be beneficial for your career should you wish to seek lateral development or promotion opportunities later on in your policing career.

We welcome applications from those currently on/looking to be on part-time hours.

If you are interested in taking this next step in your career, please express your interest by pressing apply and filling in the basic details - there is no requirement to upload evidence to support your application - this is the equivalent of an internal transfer request.

We have a simple transferee process which includes the following stages:

  1. Online Application Form - answering a few simple questions about your experience and preferred posting/location.
  2. Initial Suitability Check - confirming you are confirmed in the rank of Sgt, from a home office force and do not have any active complaints.
  3. Interview
  4. Fitness Test (if not valid from home force), medical, Vetting, PDR/Skill verification
  5. Final Offer and confirmed start date/posting details - please note that we ask for your current and preferred posting as part of your application and try to match this based on the needs of the force.

We have recently introduced a new leadership framework that outlines the expected values, behaviours and culture within our Force.
