Job description

We look forward to reading your application for the role of Policing Standards Manager - Specialist Operations.

This is an exciting opportunity to work within the Engagement and Implementation community at the College of Policing, delivering high risk, priority workstreams on behalf of the uniform policing delivery manager.

The specialist operations portfolio is responsible for management and delivery of standards, code of practice, curriculum, training products, APP, operational guidance, DE&I within specialist posts and delivery of legislation guidance for high risk areas of policing.  These areas include, armed policing, Public Order Public Safety (POPS), First Aid Learning Programme, Drones and Counter Drones, Public and Personal Safety Training (PPST), job related Fitness Testing, Protest, Mounted, Dogs and implementation of Manchester Arena Inquiry recommendations. The specialist operations PSM has responsibility for a team of 25 FTE, as the PSM for Specialist Operations you will provide professional leadership, direction and vision to the teams that you lead.

The PSM is responsible for delivery, implementation, continuous management of national standards, management of high level stakeholder relationships, including Chief Officers, NPCC and the Home Office.

There are current workstreams that the College is currently delivering, which are high risk areas that attract much political and public scrutiny.  It is essential any applicant has experience in specialist operations and managing significant levels of risk. 

The post is being offered as a secondment and it is our intention to provide a planned handover with the current post holder. Person specification

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing external networks of contacts and scanning the external environment to keep up to date on policing trends and legislative changes. Identifying solutions to policing problems and supporting forces to achieve consistency across policing.
  • Representing the College at strategic, delivery, collaborative and tactical levels within area of subject specialism. Building strong relationships and supporting NPCC strategic stakeholders in delivery of national standards within area of specialism.
  • Ensuring innovative delivery of national products for guidance, changes to legislation, knowledge sharing, sharing of best practice and operational advice

To be successful in this role you’ll need:

  • Recent operational command and control experience/accreditation at silver level or above.
  • The ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels and work collaboratively to achieve objectives
  • The ability to effectively challenge, influence, engage and inspire others, including more senior colleagues and stakeholders, to ensure the right outcome is achieved
