Detective PCEP
Description - Two-year entry programme, aimed at individuals wanting to pursue a career as a detective, that doesn’t require you to study for a degree within your probation. The PCEP DC training focusses on practical on-the-job learning, with an element of classroom-based learning at the initial stages of your training, to help equip you with the skills and knowledge to become a qualified Detective by the end of your probation.
University involvement – No
Qualification following completion – None
Detective route – Yes, this route is focussed on equipping you with the skills to become a fully qualified Detective at the end of your probation. Your learning will still involve training as a uniformed police officer in areas such as Response and Neighbourhood initially, however you will also spend time learning on-the-job in areas such as investigations to enable you to conclude your probation as a qualified Detective.
Training – In-house training delivered within WMP classrooms and via on-the job practical learning.

As a Detective Constable you will be responsible for investigating complex cases and working hard to uncover the hidden truths to ensure you bring justice to those who need it most. You will play a key role in providing critical support for victims of crime, whilst engaging with the community to build trust and cooperation to lead a successful outcome for each case you manage.
You could find yourself working in various departments from the Public Protection Unit (PPU), Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Homicide and Regional Organised Crime Unit (ROCU). No two cases or days are the same working as a Detective.
Being a Detective is a demanding and fast paced role, but the job also comes with huge rewards and job satisfaction. We are looking for individuals who have the curiosity and drive to follow every lead and ultimately discover the truth behind every situation.
About the Detective Constable Entry Programme
Detective PCEP is different to PCEP as it is designed to take Student Officers on a 2 year journey towards becoming a Detective Constable without the need for additional learning and studying towards a graduate diploma.
Our Detective Constable Entry Programme is our new and improved two-year work-based scheme aimed at people who wish to become a Detective Constable through a more vocational route with no studying towards a degree. You will undertake a period of initial learning across 22 weeks at our Tally Ho! Training Centre, followed by operational coaching and training in the wider force. The training includes a blended approach of both classroom based and practical on-the-job learning whilst being supported by experienced colleagues.
Your learning will involve training as a Uniformed Police Constable firstly and as a Police Officer you will be required to wear uniform and work with teams such as Response and Neighbourhood, dealing directly with the community and responding to emergency calls on the frontline, on a 24/7 shift pattern.
Students will be required to take the National Investigators Exam before the end of Year 2, and may commence an additional portfolio to begin to evidence competence as a Detective. The operational postings for students will include attachments into departments which investigate complex and serious crimes in order to expose the students to the reality of a career as a Detective.

You are not able to progress for more than one entry route; please apply for the route which is most suited to you, this includes both Police Constable and Detective Constable positions.
What’s in it for you?
You will start on £29,907, per annum and this will increase with yearly increments meaning you can earn up to £48,231 within 7 years of starting your training!

Are you Eligible?
Qualifications:
- Have a Level 2 English qualification (Grade C/4 or above) AND
- Have a Level 3 qualification OR 2 A level's or an academic or vocational qualification gained outside England and Wales which is considered by the UK National Recognition Information Centre to be equivalent to a level 3 qualification.
- 12 months current relevant policing experience will be accepted in place of the Level 3 qualification. This includes Special Constables with IPS, Police Community Support Officers (PCSO's), PSI's, PSIO's, Detention/Escort Officer (DEO's) or within Force Contact.
- Alternatively, 4+ years current military service is accepted in place of the Level 3 qualification
Medical/Fitness:
When applying for the role candidates must be able/ready to run the bleep test to a level of 5.4
Residency and Nationality:
Candidates are required to be UK resident for the last three years. You must be a British, Irish or EEA National, alternatively you must have no restrictions on your right to live and work in the UK.
