Job Title: Coroner's Officer Manager

Salary: The starting salary is £43,294, which includes allowances totalling £2,928.

The salary is broken down as £40,366 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £42,071. Plus, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Location: Westminster

 

The Role

  • To act within the scope of Coronial law, including the Coroners and Justice Act 2009, the Coroner’s (Investigations) Regulations 2013, the Coroners (Inquests) Rules 2013, Notification of Deaths Regulations 2019 and other relevant statutory provisions and case law to ensure compliance with the Chief Coroner’s written advice and guidance and the Human Tissue Act 2004.
  • To work together in a tri-service approach across the Coroner, the MPS and the Local Authority
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the MPS Vision, values, standards and behaviours and the strategies and programmes to be able to support staff in all seven London Jurisdictions.
  • Experience and knowledge of how to manage resources, to deliver the best service for the MPS and the Coroner’s Service.
  • Manage local conflict and complaints relating to CO’s unless MPS discipline processes are initiated.
  • To assess performance to ensure reports of deaths referred to the Coroner and confirm the correct cause of death have been established; and that formal identification of the body is completed in an ethical and empathetic manner.
  • To ensure the coroner is informed by CO’s of all open cases for decisions re actions/ closure dependent on jurisdictional requirements.
  • Deal with the public either face to face, telephone or letter/email in a police and coronial setting dependent on jurisdictional requirements.
  • Work with legal professionals and the application of Coronial Law.
  • Represent the MPS and the Coronial Service at high level meetings dependent on jurisdictional requirements.
  • Prepare strategic briefings to NPCC level.
  • Support and manage local training provision to CO’s, LA staff and others dependent on jurisdictional requirements.
  • Engage in correspondence as directed on behalf of the coroner.
  • Meet bereaved families and interested persons where necessary to ensure trust and provide them with support/referral to appropriate agencies dependent on jurisdictional requirements.
  • Consult with organizations conducting other investigations or assisting the coroner.
  • Consult with other jurisdictions and facilitate transfers of investigations dependent on jurisdictional requirements.
  • To assist in the provision of information on cases for the manager, the coroner and in reporting to the Ministry of Justice and Chief Coroner subject to each jurisdiction’s requirements
  • Ensure CO’s work as a team and attend meetings to support effective service delivery to ensure continuous improvement and the delivery of higher standards.
  • COM’s maybe required to perform on call as set down by jurisdictional requirements. They will be paid for the hours that they work via on call allowance.
  • COM’s will undertake regular mandatory training, including Chief Coroner annual 2-day sessions, any relevant local jurisdictional training and MPS professional development sessions.
  • Ensure additional judicial responsibilities that may be required in a jurisdiction have COM/LA oversight and agreement.
  • Support off site visits, formal Identification, and other tasks.
  • Manage and monitor COs.
  • COM’s will also task/manage or support LA with managing CO’s case workloads.
  • Monitor performance of CO’s and share information with LA and Coroner dependent on jurisdictional requirements.
  • Manage discipline of CO staff.
  • Ensure conduct of Coroners officers in their jurisdiction and themselves are aware of and act in accordance with the College of Policing Code of Ethics.
