About the role

Wiltshire Police are looking for an eager and passionate analytical mind to join the Wiltshire Intelligence Development Team as a criminal intelligence analyst. This is an opportunity for civilians to become involved in tactical and strategic policing and contribute toward keeping people safe and bringing justice to criminals across the county of Wiltshire. Making a difference, having a positive impact and helping protect the most vulnerable members of our community.

The intelligence team help build the picture around criminality and community issues of all types, giving you the chance to personally develop jobs and take an active role in investigation work. In the role you will actively review intelligence to identify patterns and trends, develop hypotheses and inferences to explain them, then draw conclusions and make recommendations to tackle the issues. The workload is therefore dynamic and constantly changing. The reports produced will be used to help guide decision making at all levels of policing, from officer activity in the community, to longer-term planning and resource allocation. Analyst products may also be presented in court to help enforce the law and tackle crime at the very forefront of criminal justice.

No prior experience within policing is required, but the applicant should have experience of conducting analysis in operational, tactical and strategic settings. The analyst role will offer the chance to establish a complex and highly desirable skillset, transferable to a variety of roles, creating opportunities for further advancement within the police and world of criminal justice. This diverse skillset will be continually developed through skill enhancement, training opportunities and on-job experience.

The intelligence development hub is a diverse mixture of people and personalities, and all are encouraged to apply so long as they are enthusiastic, open-minded and good at finding innovative and practical solutions to problems through critical thinking. Criminal intelligence is a constantly evolving and changing landscape. Effective communication skills are therefore essential to the analyst role as you present your work both verbally and in report format. Active and vibrant discussion of issues and problems is also encouraged to share information and develop understanding.

The applicant will need to be highly motivated and able to work under pressure and sometimes to tight deadlines. They must be able to process large amounts of data and information quickly and use this to provide concise assessments. Therefore, a familiarity with statistics, problem solving, and an analytical aptitude are highly desirable. The post holder will have access to a range of computer programs to assist applying analytical techniques; from Microsoft products to purpose built visual and geographical analysis software. Familiarity with these systems is therefore vital, as is the ability to pick things up quickly where training is provided.

Applicants will ideally hold a full driving licence or be willing and able to travel for the purpose of work and will be expected to maintain high standards of confidentially and discretion. If successful, the post-holder will be subject to security vetting.
