Job Purpose

The Metropolitan Police Service owns unique datasets, unparalleled in size and complexity in law enforcement. These include calls to 999, recorded crime, stop & search, use of force, vetting and intelligence to name but a few. We are recruiting for Data Analysts who want to access these datasets to play a meaningful role in transforming the Met approach to data analysis and evidence-based policing.

As a Data Analyst, you will be a key member of an agile multi-disciplinary analytics team, collaborating with Performance Analysts, Data Engineers and Data Scientists to model and deliver large datasets and analytical reports. A focus on modelling data in its rawest form, ensuring data/statistics are accurate and suitable to meet the reporting requirements of the wider Met stakeholders. Utilising a variety of applications to deliver the best outcome.

You will be undertaking data modelling, cleansing and enrichment, building and reviewing data models, and using data integration tools and languages to integrate and store data. You will be working to our Data Standards and influence future best practices to present, communicate and disseminate data to inform and influence. At this level we expect you to be able to utilise multiple data visualisation tools and techniques including Advanced Excel, SQL, and either Power BI or Tableau.

In 2024 we implemented a new CONNECT system, which is underpinned by a POLE (Person, Object, Location, Event) database, this gives us even more comprehensive datasets for our analysts to work with.

National County Lines Coordination Centre

These roles are funded to be working in support of the National County Lines Coordination Centre (NCLCC). The impact and harm caused by County Lines including associated violence and exploitation, is far-reaching. In response to this threat, the NCLCC was launched in 2018, as part of the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s (NPCC) Gangs and County Lines portfolio working closely with the Home Office to deliver the County Lines Programme. The NCLCC is funded by the Home Office with the aim of coordinating national law enforcement activity across England, Scotland, and Wales, increasing intelligence on the county lines threat, and informing national police development and best practice.

Data Analysts will bring skills in data visualisation, data analysis, SQL, API development and data transformation to NCLCC, to enhance the reporting and build greater insights to inform operational delivery. These two new posts will form part of the Data Analysis team in DDaT who specialise in this work, enabling the two new analysts to work in a homogenous team. This brings multiple benefits including sharing of knowledge and learning, personal development, as well as resilience in the event of staff absence, for key tasks.

The role will involve working with the Central Intelligence & Analysis team to utilise national data from the Police National Database (PND) and Agency & Partner Management Information System (APMIS) to create and deliver performance information. As these are new posts, the role holders will be required to develop new processes, including obtaining information from APMIS, and building new dashboards using Power BI. They will be required to support key products such as regular performance dashboards and annual strategic threat assessments.

As part of a funded Programme, the successful candidate(s) will need to be a person who is forward-thinking and can innovate to continuously develop and improve the quality of data insights. This includes analysis that supports the understanding of what impacts the County Lines Programme activity is having against the strategic objectives, such as reducing violence and exploitation.

Key Role Responsibilities

  • Apply tools and techniques for data analysis and data visualisation, including the use of business information (BI) tools.
  • Identify, collect and migrate data to and from a range of systems.
  • Manage, clean, abstract and aggregate data alongside a range of analytical studies on that data.
  • Manipulate and link different data sets.
  • Summarise and present data and conclusions in the most appropriate format for users
  • Deliver standalone and regular products for a range of teams, including building dashboards which conform to principles identified by the Dashboard Oversight Group.
  • Work with analytical teams including managing and mentoring junior analysts, contributing to a culture of personal development at all levels.
  • Provide the business with accurate, relevant and timely data, research and performance information that contributes to a culture of continuous improvement, enhanced efficiency and evidence-based decision-making in the police.
