This is an outstanding opportunity to join the Digital Forensic Unit at North Wales Police as a Digital Forensic Technician on a full-time permanent contract.
We are looking for an individual who has a genuine passion for technology. Someone who understands digital devices and operating systems and/or has experience within an IT environment. We want someone who has the willingness to adapt quickly and seek opportunities in every challenge; we will support the right candidate with a defined training plan.
What does the Digital Forensic Technician role entail?
Responsible to the Digital Forensic Unit Technical Manager, you will:
- Provide technical support within the Digital Forensic Unit using innovative and creative thinking to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues that may arise.
- Support officers and DFU investigators on technical matters within criminal investigations.
- Monitoring and maintaining the health of current DFU systems whilst testing and deploying new software, liaising with vendors and suppliers to ensure the highest level of service is maintained throughout the Unit.
- Develop your technical and legislative knowledge for both general and personal development. This will include internal and external training and development opportunities to ensure excellence in delivering a technical service.
Six monthly welfare screening is mandatory for this role due to the unpleasant and distressing nature of some of the material handled by the Digital Forensic Unit (DFU).
What will I need to be considered for the Digital Forensic Technician role?
- Either:
- Educated to HNC or equivalent in a relevant area such as Computer Science.
OR
- Experience in a relevant area of business such as IT Technical Support or Network Administration.
- Ability to identify / disassemble / assemble computer devices e.g. laptops, desktops.
- Ability to identify, remove and install different computer / server components.
- A thorough knowledge of different digital media storage devices including current, future, and older technologies.
- A knowledge of both current and previous generation operating systems such as Windows 10, 11, Mac OSX, Windows Server and Linux.
- An understanding of software version control and different software deployment methods such as SCCM.
- A working knowledge of PowerShell or similar scripting technologies.
- A working knowledge of corporate computer networks and protocols such as DNS, DHCP, VLANs and IP Addressing.
- An understanding of domain and server maintenance tasks such as Active Directory, Group Policy and File Permissions.
- Experience of using Virtualisation technologies such as Hyper-V.
- Proven decision-making and excellent communication skills.
- Willing to attend residential training and to complete the CSDRA course.
- Ability to present complex data in a clear and precise manner to a diverse audience.
- Able to effectively brief staff and represent the Force on matters relating to computers, networks, the internet and digital storage devices.
- An ability to meticulously follow Standard Operating Procedures and industry good practices, keeping up to date with changes through personal study and provided training, continuously aiming towards improvement of processes.
