Volunteer restorative justice facilitator (Ref: 63)

Purpose

Restorative justice is a victim centred process which supports a victim to communicate safely with the person who has caused them harm.

Restorative justice helps victims to deal with the questions, the emotions and the stress caused by the harm and the person who has caused it. This enables victims to move on with their lives.

‘Communicate safely’ can mean face to face, by letter or through questions asked via a facilitator. All our restorative justice processes are managed and supported by independent trained facilitators some of who are volunteers.

This role carries a significant degree of social and community responsibility and volunteers will be required to undertake three days training before beginning any restorative justice work. All processes are managed in pairs there is no requirement for lone working.

What you will be doing

The role will be varied, it will include:

  • Liaising with local police officers or representatives from other agencies.
  • Liaising with victims either in person or by phone or e-mail etc.
  • Liaising with offenders either in person or by phone or e-mail etc.
  • Arranging and conducting pre-meetings including risk assessment.
  • Facilitating restorative processes.  This could be face to face conferences but can include facilitating the exchange of letters or questions.
  • Provide written reports to update cases/outcomes.
Skills, experience and qualities needed

To get the most out of the opportunity it would be beneficial to have an understanding of the structure and work of the police and criminal justice system.

You must:

  • Be a confident communicator.
  • Have an ability to demonstrate a wide range of people skills.
  • Be able show skills of negotiation.
  • Understand how to promote and encourage effective dialogue between participants.
  • Be able to remain objective and impartial and to treat all participants with respect while being sensitive to diversity and individual needs.
  • Be cognisant of your own time management.
  • Have good IT skills.

Previous experience of chairing or leading meetings would be advantageous.

Location and times

The role will nominally be home based but will require travel during preparation for and participation in restorative processes.

Days and times are flexible but there is a necessity to fit meetings around the requirements of the participants. When a conference is in preparation it is important to progress promptly in order to best support victims.

There can be periods of intense activity while a restorative process is in preparation and being run, and then periods of quiet until a new referral is received in your area.

Training and support

All volunteers receive a local induction and Volunteer Handbook with all the information you will need to support you as a volunteer.

You will be required to pass a three day Facilitators Course provided by the Restorative Justice team prior to commencing the role.

Personal judgement is needed to assess the appropriateness of a volunteer accepting a case, particularly in respect of time management.

There is continual support from the Restorative Justice Team and after facilitating a restorative process as a volunteer you will be de-briefed and offered support.

Other information

Expenses will be paid for travelling incurred as a result of the role.

This role will require a security check, a health check and for you to sign an agreement to maintain confidentiality, as you may have access to sensitive material.

Safeguarding and children vulnerable adults

Lincolnshire Police has a duty to promote the welfare of, and safeguard of children and vulnerable adults. Volunteers are required to comply with Force Policy and Standard Operating Procedures in respect of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.
