Working as part of our People and Change function, we’re excited to offer the opportunity to join our newly formed team as Internal Communications Manager. This role plays a vital part in delivering improved employee awareness and understanding of the connection between their roles and our vision and values and to influence the organisational behaviours and culture to help us deliver that vision. The Internal Communications Manager will provide a first-class internal communications service, always looking for innovative ways to reach out to our internal audience and keep up to date with industry trends. Working with the campaigns, channels and content creation teams to ensure the consistent delivery of good internal communications across the force.

The Internal Communications Manager role is available with an annual salary of £36,529.65 (plus £3033.56 London Allowance per annum where applicable). We champion a flexible approach to working, so this role can be based at any of our UK Hubs: Birmingham, London, Manchester, Leeds, Cardiff, and Glasgow with a blended approach of home and office-based working will be supported. 

The principal accountabilities of the Internal Communications Manager include but is not limited to:

  • Act as an advisor to functions and teams in how to get the most out of their audience, acting as the subject matter expert in communicating with an internal audience
  • Partner with Communications and Engagement colleagues to deliver aligned and consistent communications, across internal, external, stakeholders and division building relationships and insight into our organisation.
  • Play a pivotal role in in increasing the adoption and use of Viva Engage as our main two-way internal communications tool, working with leaders to understand the value of engagement on this channel.
  • Ensuring Viva Engage forms an integral part of our internal campaigns, gathering audience insight and engagement levels.
  • Support the Internal Communications Lead with the implementation of a ‘cascade’ structure to allow regular dissemination of key strategic information from the Chief Officer Group downwards, including every level of the organisation
  • Support the Internal Communications Lead with the implementation a Forcewide recognition scheme including an events schedule to celebrate our unsung heroes
  • Be the communications lead for diversity and inclusion within the Force, helping to build a truly diverse workforce and an inclusive culture where our people feel valued and able to bring their whole selves to work.
  • Support the roll out and maintenance of the new intranet, devising and executing a campaign to launch and encourage adoption.
  • Support the Internal Communications Lead end to end delivery of the annual all people survey and assist with arranging post survey briefings and action plan reporting. Manage the departmental action plan ensuring it remains up to date.

You’ll also be required to evidence the following skills: 

  • An effective, innovative and creative verbal and non-verbal communicator. The ability to translate complex information into simple, engaging and human centered language and produce written content for an internal audience to an extremely high standard.
  • Politically aware and astute, demonstrates the ability to make decisions and give advice to stakeholders within the context of the whole organisation and the external environment.
  • Proven experience of effectively using a multi-media approach to target and engage with different audiences.
  • Ability to work in a busy and high-pressure environment and to tight deadlines - managing multiple projects and stakeholders with the ability to prioritise.
  • A strategic and practical thinker.
  • Able to work as an individual or part of a team.
  • Able to work on their own initiative.
  • Ability to establish, build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Excellent influencing and negotiating skills, helping people understand the value of internal communications / taking targeted and relevant approach.
  • Knowledge of internal communications in response to crisis scenarios.
  • In depth knowledge of internal communications theory, audience segmentation, planning, measurement and execution.
  • Understanding of technology tools that support internal communications, such as Sharepoint and Viva Engage 
  • Fluency in Welsh language, written and verbal is desirable (if based in Cardiff)
